2020 GMC Terrain: News, Specs, Price

The GMC Terrain is a handsome, well-handling, compact
crossover available in the high-value Denali trim. With this model, GMC has a
rival for the highly completive class where vehicles like the Hyundai Santa Fe,
Ford Escape and Subaru Forster belong as well. The mechanically identical Chevy
Equinox is also the part of this class.

GM redesigned the Terrain for the 2018 model year and it can
be had with three turbocharged powertrain options including the diesel unit.
However, the Terrain hasn’t performed as well as the closely-relative Equinox
which was recently spotted while testing in the camouflaged form. The refreshed
Equinox should appear for the 2020 model year but the Terrain was also caught
in testing mode but will more likely appear for the 2021 market year.

A for the 2020 GMC Terrain, the things should remain pretty much the same. A known fact is that GM won’t offer the all-wheel drive with the diesel unit for the 2020 model year and there would likely be some changes in the equipment organization and color options.

2020 GMC Terrain: Design

The next mid-cycle update should bring revised front-end
design and a few new details at the rear side. The front should adopt a larger
more dynamic grille version and headlights similar to what we can see on the
new GMC Sierra trucks. However, it’s more likely that refreshed Terrain will
hit the market as the 2021 version.

In the meantime, the 2020 GMC Terrain will repeat the
current form defined with large GMC grille, C-shaped signature lights, floating
roof and handsome body sculpting. There will be black and chrome exterior
treatment and wheel options ranging from 17 to 19 inches. GMC should provide
new color options for the 2020 version.

Interior, equipment:

The cabin of the Terrain is nicely detailed and comes with
well-configured controls. The Terrain provides also high-comfort and luxury
features combined with modern electronic equipment. The 2020 Terrain will stay
in the same form inside the cabin but GMC might expand the availability of the
safety features.

The Terrain will be well equipped staring from the base
version which will include a leather-wrapped steering wheel, keyless entry and
ignition, privacy glass, heated mirrors, alloy wheels, etc. The base equipment
will also cover six speakers, Apple Car Play and Android Auto compatibility and
7-inch screen-based infotainment system.

Upper grades and optional packages will add heated and power
front seats, dual-zone climate control, an 8-inch screen-based infotainment
system, navigation, leather upholstery, heated steering wheel, etc.

The Denali version will sit at the top of the lineup and
equip Denali-unique grille, 19-inch wheel design, upgraded upholstery,
contrasting stitching, wood accents, heated and ventilated seats and more.

The safety equipment will include parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, etc. GMC offers these systems at extra cost in almost all trims now but should make them more accessible for the new model year.

2020 GMC Terrain: Powertrains, Efficiency

The 2020 GMC Terrain won’t change the powering options and
three choices will again be in front of the buyers. GM will, however,
discontinue the all-wheel-drive option with the turbodiesel engine.

The base setup will include a 1.5-liter turbocharged
four-cylinder petrol engine combined with the 9-speed automatic gearbox and
front-wheel drive. The engine makes 170 hp and torque of 203 pound-feet. The
all-wheel-drive option will be available. The base turbo-4 engine will provide
up to 30 mpg highway with the front-wheel drive or 28 mpg highway with the power
on all wheels.

For more power buyers can switch to the 2.0-liter
turbocharged engine which comes with the upgraded exhaust system and brakes.
This engine makes 252 hp and peak torque of 260 pound-feet. With the all-wheel
drive, this engine should return 21 mpg city and 26 mpg highway.

For the new model year, the 1.6-liter turbocharged
four-cylinder diesel engine will come in the combination with the
front-wheel-drive only and six-speed automatic transmission. The engine
produces 137 hp and torque of 240 pound-feet. This setup will return 28 mpg
city and 38 mpg highway.

2020 GMC Terrain: Release, Price

The 2020 GMC Terrain should appear late in the year. There
should be small price corrections with the starting price again around $25,
000. With more equipment on board, the price will instantly go above $30, 000.
The Denali will start in high-$30,000.
